A technical problem affecting air traffic control operations in Scotland is leading to flight delays across various airports in the UK. The national air traffic service, Nats, indicated that engineers have been dispatched to address the issue at the Prestwick Centre, located in South Ayrshire. This centre is responsible for managing air traffic across Scotland and the northern part of England.
Nats clarified that the current disruption is unrelated to an earlier software fault that caused the cancellation of approximately 2,000 flights throughout the UK earlier this month. Meanwhile, numerous passengers have reported delays on social media at airports including Glasgow, Prestwick, and Edinburgh. Other airports experiencing delays include Manchester, Newcastle, and Belfast.
The Manchester Airports Group revealed that some flights at Manchester Airport have encountered delays of up to an hour, and similar delays have been noted as well at East Midlands Airport. Belfast City Airport has seen several cancellations affecting routes to and from Manchester, Amsterdam, London City, and later in the day, flights to Glasgow and Edinburgh. Furthermore, flights at Dundee and Benbecula airports are also being impacted by the disruption.
An Edinburgh Airport representative remarked, “We are experiencing some delays due to the Nats issue at Prestwick Centre. We are monitoring the situation closely and are working with Nats as they work to resolve the issue.” Efforts are ongoing to restore normal operations as swiftly as possible
