Liverpool Recovery Month celebrates diverse recovery experiences

Liverpool Recovery Month is concluding with a focus on how factors such as gender, sexuality, identity, and personal experience influence the recovery process. The final week features a variety of activities designed to bring the local community together—including coffee mornings, creative workshops, film screenings, walks, and alcohol-free social gatherings. The week highlights and honors the resilience and accomplishments of women, men, trans, non-binary, and gender-diverse individuals, as well as members of Liverpool’s LGBTQIA+ community.

Recovery looks different for every individual, influenced by elements such as trauma, discrimination, caregiving duties, and societal pressures, all of which can impact mental wellbeing and create barriers to seeking help. It is important that residents have access to empathetic support services that acknowledge and respect their identities while addressing their unique needs.

Councillor Harry Doyle, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Culture, emphasized the inclusive nature of the week, stating, “Everyone deserves to feel safe, respected and understood when asking for help. This week celebrates the strength of people across Liverpool and makes clear that recovery support is available to residents of every gender, sexuality, identity and background.” Supporting this view, Professor Matthew Ashton, Director of Public Health for Liverpool City Council, remarked, “Recovery support should recognise the whole person. By listening to different lived experiences, services can provide compassionate support that helps people feel safe, understood and able to make their own choices.”

For those seeking assistance, RIVER Liverpool offers free and confidential drug and alcohol support for adults, including a specialized Women’s Hub. No appointment is needed to visit a RIVER hub, or help can be accessed by calling 0151 706 7888. Additionally, the LGBT Foundation provides targeted recovery, wellbeing, and community services for Liverpool’s LGBTQIA+ population. Comprehensive regional support listings are also available for Liverpool and Merseyside residents to explore further options
