Reform UK’s deputy leader, Richard Tice, has publicly accused Sarah Cooper-Lesadd, a former Senedd Member, of being dishonest about her political convictions prior to her defection to Plaid Cymru. Cooper-Lesadd, who was originally elected representing Reform UK in May, made headlines after switching allegiance, which prompted strong reactions from her previous party’s leadership.
This development comes amid a turbulent period for Reform UK, as their Welsh leader recently resigned following an arrest connected to allegations of assault and coercive behavior. Helen Jenner, the current deputy leader for Wales, is widely expected to step into the leadership role next week. Despite these challenges, Tice emphasized that the party remains focused on its key political priorities, noting that politics involves both successful and difficult moments.
Tice criticized Cooper-Lesadd’s change of stance, especially given her previous support for the UK remaining in the European Union, and questioned how she passed Reform UK’s vetting process as a Remain voter. “If someone deliberately misleads you, and fibs to you, and lies to you, then it doesn’t matter how much vetting you do,” he stated. He further described her shift from unionism to supporting Welsh independence as “absurd,” questioning how such a transformation aligned with the party’s values.
Responding to these accusations, Plaid Cymru maintained that Cooper-Lesadd had been transparent about her evolving political views. The party highlighted that she had openly acknowledged the changes in her beliefs since initially entering politics. Meanwhile, despite the scandals, Reform UK’s elected representatives continue their work on issues like immigration, small boat crossings, and local policies, with Tice affirming that the party will soon have new leadership and that their focus remains on serving their constituents effectively
