A police officer in pursuit of a suspect on foot received unexpected assistance from a passing motorist who stopped her Nissan Micra and offered the officer a ride by telling him to “get in.” The chase involved 25-year-old Jacob Roberts, who had recklessly reverse-rammed a police vehicle twice before colliding with parked cars and a building in an attempt to evade capture.
Roberts had been driving erratically after officers detected the smell of cannabis emanating from his van. His reckless behavior included ignoring multiple junction stops, mounting sidewalks, and endangering pedestrians as he sped away. When Roberts reached a dead-end street in Abercwmboi, Rhondda Cynon Taf, he abandoned his van and tried to flee on foot, prompting the officer to seek assistance.
Bodycam footage recorded the moment when the officer approached a red Nissan Micra driven by an unnamed woman and requested a lift, saying, “I need a lift.” The driver responded promptly, “Get in.” While following the fleeing suspect, the woman asked for directions with the question, “Where to?” Shortly after spotting Roberts, the officer exited the vehicle, deployed his taser, and successfully arrested him.
Following a search, officers found two cannabis cigarettes on Roberts, a resident of Mountain Ash. On 16 September at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court, Roberts pleaded guilty to several offenses including dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, failure to stop after a collision, criminal damage, and possession of a controlled Class B substance. He was sentenced to one year and two months in prison and received a driving ban lasting three years. Speaking on the case, PC Kerswell remarked, “Roberts was already banned from driving when he committed these offences – he showed complete disregard for all other road users, including pedestrians.” He added, “I hope it acts as a deterrent for others who think of driving dangerously,” and noted, “It’s lucky that no one was seriously injured during this pursuit. We hope this sentence will give Roberts time to reflect on his actions.
