New revelations have surfaced from an upcoming book authored by Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, in which he recounts a phone conversation with the then-Prince Charles shortly after the Princess of Wales passed away. According to Spencer, Charles appeared “giddily elated” during the call, a reaction that has sparked controversy.
In an excerpt released on Thursday by the Daily Mail, Spencer described Charles as sounding like a “lottery winner” during the exchange. He suggested that the prince’s initial thoughts were more focused on the possibility of marrying the woman he loved, rather than mourning the loss of Diana. Spencer wrote, “I suspect the Prince’s first reaction must have been to think more of how this event might free him to marry the woman he loved, rather than appreciating the loss of one he did not.”
This is not the first time Earl Spencer has made claims about Charles’s reaction to Diana’s death; previously, he quoted the prince as saying “we’ll forget her soon enough” just days after the tragedy. Buckingham Palace responded firmly to these allegations, stating, “His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss.”
