Liverpool City Council has undertaken a project to revitalize the memorial garden at Springwood Crematorium, aiming to offer a more inviting and soothing environment for families to honor and celebrate the memories of babies and children. This newly updated space is intended to serve as a tranquil retreat for reflection and remembrance.
The garden now features a woodland-inspired theme, complete with custom signage, artistic wildlife motifs, and a redesigned wall for memorial plaques. Visitors will find bright-colored benches and a picnic area, encouraging families to spend quiet, meaningful moments together.
A significant addition to the garden is a dedicated section designated for the ashes of babies who passed away before 24 weeks and were cared for by Liverpool Women’s Hospital. This marks the first time such families have been provided with a specific memorial area to scatter ashes and remember their lost children. Importantly, the garden remains open to the public at all times.
To celebrate the reopening of the garden, a brief commemorative service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, 1 October. Organized in collaboration with the Good Funeral Company, the event welcomes all members of the community to attend. Following the service, attendees will have the chance to explore the revamped garden and spend time in quiet contemplation. Refreshments will be provided, weather permitting.
Councillor Laura Robertson-Collins, Cabinet Member for Communities, Neighbourhoods and Streetscene, expressed the council’s intentions, saying, “The loss of a baby or child is something no family should ever have to experience, and we hope that this space will provide comfort to those who are grieving. The memorial garden has been redesigned to create a more peaceful and welcoming space for families to remember their loved ones in their own way. This garden will provide a lasting place of remembrance that will support families for years to come.”
