Sheffield Wednesday Football Club is investigating an incident where two of its supporters were pictured mocking Bradley Lowery. Mr Lowery was six years old when he died from cancer. The picture, taken at Hillsborough, was posted online during a game between Sheffield Wednesday and Sunderland. Sheffield Wednesday has stated that it will look into the incident along with the police. “We roundly condemn this outrageous and utterly deplorable behaviour,” a spokesperson for the club said.
Jermain Defoe, the Sunderland striker, became best friends with Mr Lowery after meeting him in 2016. The footballer visited the young boy in hospital regularly and the pair walked out onto the field for England’s World Cup qualifier against Lithuania. Mr Lowery was a huge Sunderland fan and his fondness for the club saw him become the team’s mascot. Before his death, more than £700,000 was raised to pay for the young boy to undergo antibody treatment in New York.
The incident has been condemned online, with football fans expressing their disappointment with the behaviour of the supporters. Mr Lowery was a “true inspiration” to many, one person posted on social media. Another stated that they hoped the club “does something about it”. South Yorkshire Police has reportedly been approached for comment.
Sunderland won the game 3-0 and the club has since issued a statement in response to the incident. “We are aware of the incident and have passed the matter on to Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Services for them to deal with. As and when we have any further updates, we will share them with our supporters,” the statement read
