In Coventry, a major fire broke out in a 16-story apartment building, with more than 50 firefighters coming to the scene to tackle the blaze. The fire is believed to have started on the 11th floor of Samuel Vale House, with smoke spreading upwards to other floors. According to onlookers, people were seen receiving oxygen treatment, but it’s currently unclear if anyone was seriously injured. Fortunately, several residents had stayed back in their homes but had to be evacuated quickly to ensure their safety.
Fire officials said that parts of the building were evacuated, and search and rescue teams went inside in protective gear to evacuate people. The fire crews used ten fire engines, four-wheel drive response vehicles, and a hydraulic aerial platform to put out the fire. Witnesses on-site posted pictures on social media showing the flames and thick black smoke emanating from the building.
A fire service spokesman said the cause of the fire is still under investigation. The building comes under Citizen Housing, and the fire service officials said they are liaising with the association to get a clear understanding of the events. The tower block was cordoned off to maintain the perimeter of the emergency services.
Coventry’s North West Labour MP Taiwo Owatemi expressed gratitude toward the responding firefighters, who battled the fire quickly at Samuel Vale House.
