David Chapman, director of UK Hospitality Cymru, described the financial pressures on the hospitality industry as akin to “plate spinning when you’re riding an exercise bike.” He highlighted the various challenges businesses in the sector are currently facing, emphasizing the complex and demanding nature of managing operations amid these difficulties.
Chapman detailed the numerous financial burdens affecting hospitality businesses, including significant taxation from multiple sources such as VAT and business rates. He also pointed to recent years of high inflation and escalating energy prices. Moreover, increased labor costs, driven by changes to National Insurance, have compounded the strain on businesses. “And so it’s been a very difficult job, a really difficult balancing act to keep going,” he added, underscoring the delicate nature of sustaining operations in the current environment.
Despite these challenges, Chapman expressed optimism about recent policy changes, particularly the reduction in business rates. He welcomed the 20% cut in England for pubs, social clubs, and live music venues, viewing it as a promising step forward. According to him, this cut marks “the beginnings of a change which I hope will permanently enable our businesses to look at growth and to look at further employment, and to start to plan ahead.”
Representing the UK government, a spokesperson highlighted that the Chancellor made support for the hospitality sector a priority by implementing these business rate reductions during the first week in office. They also noted that since business rates are devolved, additional funding resulting from this decision is allocated to the Welsh government for its discretion.
