Currently competing at the 2026 IWBF World Championships in Ottawa, Canada, Great Britain’s men’s and women’s squads are gearing up for their home European Championships next year. The men’s team comes in as silver medallists from Paris 2024—their best Paralympic result in nearly three decades—and holders of the 2023 European Championship and 2018 World Championship titles. Meanwhile, the women’s team has been building momentum with European silver medals in 2023 and 2025, and a strong fifth-place finish at Paris 2024. Local support will be strong, with Liverpool native Abdi Jama and Manchester-based players such as Robyn Love, Laurie Williams, and Henley Cavanagh featuring in the wider Great Britain squad.
Terry Bywater, a Great Britain wheelchair basketball player and Paris 2024 Paralympic silver medallist, emphasized the sport’s thrilling nature: “Wheelchair basketball is incredibly fast, it’s physical, and there’s so much happening on court that you can barely take your eyes off the game. There’s the noise of the wheels, the collisions, the crowd and the speed of the players – it’s an incredible atmosphere. You can go from one end of the court to the other in seconds and the whole game can change in a heartbeat. I’ve played this sport for more than 25 years and it still gives me a buzz. So come along, bring the family and get behind the teams – you’re in for a cracking day out!” Abdi Jama added, “As a player, to have an international tournament in my home city is incredible and a fantastic opportunity to showcase this amazing sport.”
