A significant gathering took place at the National Memorial Arboretum to dedicate a permanent monument honoring veterans and armed forces personnel who have died by suicide. This tribute, known as The Elysium Memorial, is situated in Alrewas, Staffordshire, and marks the first memorial of its kind to be established in the United Kingdom.
Over the past three decades, more than 1,300 members of the military community, including veterans, have taken their own lives. The memorial has been created to offer a reflective space for those mourning the loss of friends or family members to suicide. It serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made beyond the battlefield.
Edward Mackenzie, who co-founded the Elysium Memorial Foundation responsible for the project, expressed his amazement at the turnout. On the day of the dedication, over 300 motorcyclists rode in a convoy from Burton-on-Trent, an event coordinated by the community group Wheels for Wishes.
Mackenzie, an army veteran with over 30 years of service and a personal history of losing more than 20 friends to suicide, including his closest companion, emphasized the importance of the memorial’s recognition. Reflecting on the project, he said, “This is why I did it, I did for the friends, the families, the comrades, those that we’ve lost to suicide.” He also noted the gratitude he received from families present, stating, “There’s a lot of families here today that have been thanking me for achieving this memorial so I’m incredibly grateful.
