A 39-year-old male has been formally charged following the hijacking of a bus in County Tyrone on Saturday. The individual reportedly threatened the bus driver with a knife before allowing the passengers to leave the vehicle. However, the driver was forced to remain on board during the incident.
Among the charges brought against the man are kidnapping, hijacking, aggravated vehicle taking causing injury, and possession of an offensive weapon. He is scheduled to appear before Enniskillen Magistrates Court on Monday to face these allegations.
The incident unfolded in the Beltany Road area of Omagh, County Tyrone, just before 1 p.m. BST. According to police reports, the suspect hijacked a Translink Goldliner coach and then fled towards Newtownstewart. A police pursuit followed along the A5, passing through Victoria Bridge and Sion Mills, covering nearly 20 miles.
Footage widely shared on social media showed the bus speeding through residential neighborhoods while being chased by a Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) patrol car. Eventually, the vehicle was stopped in the Head of the Town area of Strabane where the man, described as being in his 30s, was removed and arrested. The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service confirmed that two individuals were taken to South West Acute Hospital for medical treatment
