A member of staff at the US embassy in south London has been accused of possessing indecent images of children. The individual was detained at their residence before being flown out of the UK in August without having been formally questioned by British police. The US Embassy has confirmed to the BBC that an investigation into the allegations is underway, and the staff member has been reassigned to the United States while inquiries proceed.
Officials from the embassy stated, “The United States government expects all personnel to adhere to the highest standards of conduct, and we take these allegations seriously.” They also mentioned that UK law enforcement authorities were promptly informed, and swift measures were taken in response to the situation.
Although the individual worked at the US embassy in Vauxhall, south west London, they were not classified as a diplomat but were still protected under diplomatic immunity. Despite being transported back to the US on a commercial flight, investigations are continuing collaboratively between UK authorities and US officials.
