The Great North Run (GNR), the world’s biggest half marathon, took place this weekend on Tyneside with 63,000 runners participating, including Prime Minister Andy Burnham. England football captain Dan Burn rang the starter’s bell, while football personality Chris Kamara and fitness coach Joe Wicks were among the notable participants.
The 13.1-mile (21km) race started in Newcastle, passing through Gateshead and South Tyneside, and finished in South Shields. Elite winners included David Weir and Melanie Woods in the wheelchair races, Brigid Kosgei in the women’s race, and Zouhair Talbi in the men’s race.
Now in its 45th year, the event raises around £25 million annually for charity. The day was marked by sunny weather, tens of thousands of spectators lining the route, and a Red Arrows flyover at the start and finish. Runners supported various causes, often dressing in costumes such as nuns, horses, and even giant ovaries to raise funds.
Andy Burnham completed the run in just under two hours (1:57), supporting the North East charity Changing Lives. He praised the community spirit and warmth on the day, highlighting the collective effort behind the event
