Zack Polanski, the leader of the Green Party, has been chosen as the party’s candidate for the upcoming by-election in Holborn and St Pancras, the parliamentary seat previously held by Sir Keir Starmer. Polanski, who currently serves as a member of the London Assembly, will contest the election scheduled for 8 October as he aims to secure a seat in Parliament.
The decision to nominate Polanski came following a vote among members of the Camden Green Party, who selected him over local councillor Hamza Chowdhury. Speaking about his candidacy, Polanski acknowledged that the Greens might be seen as the underdogs but emphasized the party’s growing momentum and potential to win. He reflected on his personal connection to the area, noting that Camden has been his home since he first moved to London two decades ago and that he has lived and worked across Holborn and St Pancras during much of that time.
Polanski highlighted some of the challenges facing residents of the area, sharing his own experience of frequently moving between flats—a struggle familiar to many Londoners—and expressed empathy for those dealing with difficult circumstances. He urged voters to support the Greens as a way to send a strong message to both the council and the government that better conditions are needed for local communities. While optimistic about his chances, Polanski stated he remains “confident but not complacent” and emphasized the importance of holding Prime Minister Andy Burnham to account by working constructively with him to address gaps in his plans.
The announcement of Polanski’s selection was made by Green MP Hannah Spencer, who noted the “overwhelming” backing he received from party members. The Greens had previously finished second to Labour in the recent Camden Council elections earlier this year. This by-election represents an early test of Prime Minister Burnham’s popularity and Labour’s ability to retain support in inner-city areas, particularly in the face of increasing competition from the Greens.
