Amazon, the major retail company, has submitted an application to extend its drone delivery service throughout an entire town where it has been testing the technology. This marks a significant step in the expansion of its innovative delivery method.
The company first revealed in January that Darlington had been selected as the UK’s testing ground for Prime Air, making it the first time this drone delivery service has operated outside the United States. Flights began on a limited scale in February, enabling customers living within a 7.5-mile radius of the County Durham facility to receive certain parcels via drone.
Having successfully completed over 500 deliveries, Amazon is now seeking approval from the Civil Aviation Authority to broaden the service to cover all of Darlington. David Carbon, Vice President of Prime Air, expressed optimism about obtaining permission shortly and shared the long-term goal of rolling out drone delivery across the entire UK.
Currently, qualified customers in Darlington can expect deliveries within two hours, provided they have an accessible garden, yard, or driveway. Additionally, packages must weigh less than 5 pounds and fit inside a container approximately the size of a large shoebox. Employees at the site reported their quickest delivery time to date was only 39 minutes
