Last summer, a malfunctioning valve aboard the CalMac ferry MV Glen Sannox caused an unexpected and uncontrolled release of a significant volume of highly flammable methane gas. According to an investigation by the ferry operator, around 700 kilograms of methane — enough to fill a typical four-bedroom house — escaped over a 12-minute interval as the vessel carried 82 passengers on a journey from Arran to the Scottish mainland. The volume of gas released was so substantial that some of it was drawn into the ship’s ventilation system, activating gas alarms within the generator room.
The propulsion systems for Glen Sannox, which is the first UK-built ferry designed to run directly on liquefied natural gas (LNG), were developed by Wartsila, a Finnish company specializing in LNG engines. This firm operated as a subcontractor for Ferguson Marine, the shipyard responsible for building the vessel. The details of the incident only emerged following a Freedom of Information request by BBC Scotland News, and since the event, CalMac has avoided running the ship’s main engines on LNG and completely emptied the methane tank in November.
