Prince George is about to embark on a significant new chapter in his life as he prepares to start at Eton College. This prestigious school, located in Berkshire, boasts a long history and notable alumni, including 20 British prime ministers. George’s choice to attend Eton follows a family tradition; his father, the Prince of Wales, also went to the school, as did his uncle Prince Harry and great uncle Earl Spencer. At 13 years old, Prince George is joining Eton as a boarder, where annual fees can reach around £65,000. As the eldest son of Prince William and Catherine, he remains second in line to the British throne.
Prior to this decision, there was much discussion regarding which school Prince George would enroll in after completing his education at the independent preparatory school Lambrook, also based in Berkshire. Ultimately, the royal family opted for a well-established and respected institution in Eton, reflecting both tradition and continuity. The school houses approximately 25 boarding houses, each accommodating around 55 boys, with dedicated residential staff and a house master overseeing their welfare. Conveniently, Eton College is not far from the family’s residence in Windsor.
The Good Schools Guide has recognized the boarding experience at Eton as one where some boys adjust quickly while others take more time to settle. Each pupil is provided with their own single room, fostering a sense of independence. Melanie Sanderson, the managing editor of the school guide, praised Eton for its “spectacular facilities and spacious grounds,” emphasizing that despite its historic architecture, the school maintains a modern and progressive ethos. She articulated that many boys arriving at the age of 13 may not fully anticipate their futures, but Prince George’s path is notably distinct. According to Sanderson, his parents believe that Eton will provide the best preparation for his role as a contemporary working royal.
Eton’s reputation extends beyond royal connections, with a number of recent political leaders among its former students, including Lord David Cameron, Boris Johnson, Kwasi Kwarteng, and Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg. The school has also produced well-known actors such as Eddie Redmayne, Dominic West, Damian Lewis, and Tom Hiddleston. Reflecting on his time at Eton, Prince William once shared in an interview at age 18 that he “really enjoyed being able to go about Eton as just another student,” highlighting the school’s ability to offer a degree of normalcy despite its prestigious status
