Gladys was pollinated on June 30th and at her most vigorous stage, she was putting on weight at a rate of 40 pounds (18 kilograms) per day. Growing this enormous vegetable required months of careful preparation, including studying irrigation methods and managing precise water and nutrient levels.
White, who works professionally as an underfloor heating designer, dedicates his spare time to cultivating vegetables within a 60-foot (18-meter) polytunnel located at a nearby farm. His gardening efforts extend beyond giant pumpkins, as he also grows tomatoes, peppers, chillies, watermelons, and sweet potatoes to reduce his dependence on supermarket produce.
“There is something incredibly satisfying about walking on to the plot and bringing home food you’ve grown yourself,” White shared, expressing the personal fulfillment he gains from his gardening pursuits. His commitment to growing impressive vegetables was recognized in 2021 when he became the first individual to display a giant pumpkin inside the Great Pavilion at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
