Police are currently looking into an incident that took place during Portsmouth’s 2-0 victory over Cardiff in a Championship match on Saturday. The event involved Cardiff defender Krystian Bielik and some home supporters. The confrontation occurred late in the second half when Bielik approached the crowd to collect a ball, leading to a physical altercation with a fan.
Hampshire Police were informed about the incident during the game and quickly opened an investigation afterwards. A police spokesperson stated, “We can confirm that we are investigating an incident in which a teenage boy was reportedly the victim of a common assault during the football match at Fratton Park. Our enquiries are ongoing.” Several Portsmouth fans appeared to demonstrate that they believed the fan had been grabbed by the throat.
Brian Barry-Murphy, Cardiff’s head coach, reported after the match that Bielik “got slapped in the face.” Meanwhile, video clips posted on social media showed the Polish player seemingly grabbing a young supporter around the upper body. Following the altercation, another fan threw a ball at Cardiff defender Perry Ng’s head. Both of these supporters were subsequently removed from the stadium.
In response to the situation, Portsmouth’s head coach John Mousinho offered an apology to Cardiff’s players. The club released a statement emphasizing their awareness of the concerns raised by supporters. They said the matter is being treated as a safeguarding issue and is under investigation by both the club and police, so it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage. The club urged caution around speculation as inquiries proceed and reaffirmed that the welfare and safeguarding of young people remain a top priority. The Football Association has also been made aware of the incident and will assess the referee’s match report before determining if any disciplinary action is necessary. Cardiff City further expressed satisfaction with how match officials handled the situation during the game, stressing that player protection is always a priority
