In Sheffield, lollipop men and women are now being equipped with body-worn cameras to address issues of abuse and aggressive conduct from motorists. This initiative, introduced by Sheffield City Council, involves issuing cameras to school crossing wardens at various locations across the city, though specific sites have not been disclosed. These devices will capture footage of interactions between wardens and drivers.
The council emphasized that this step aims to enhance safety for families traveling to school as the academic year begins, while also offering reassurance to wardens who often work alone. There have been reports of some motorists displaying unacceptable behaviour and risky driving around school crossing areas, prompting the need for such protective measures.
According to Jefferson Nwokeoma, assistant director of city transport for the council, the cameras serve multiple purposes. He stated, “These body-worn cameras will help protect our staff, provide valuable evidence when incidents occur and encourage motorists to follow the rules of the road.” He further added, “Ultimately, this is about making the journey to school safer for everyone.”
It is important for drivers to remember that failing to stop for a school crossing warden can result in a fine of up to £1,000, in addition to three penalty points on their driving licence.
