Kelcie Reed, a 24-year-old woman from Bristol, has received a suspended prison sentence following a tragic incident involving her XL bully dog. The dog attacked and killed her 19-year-old cousin, Morgan Dorsett, at Reed’s flat in south Bristol in February 2025. Reed had previously admitted to being responsible for a dog that was dangerously out of control, which resulted in Morgan’s fatal injuries.
The fatal attack led to emergency services rushing to the scene at Cobhorn Drive, Bishopsworth, where Morgan was found with severe neck and facial wounds. Despite the attempts of the responders, a post-mortem examination confirmed that Morgan died from bites inflicted during the incident. The dog, named Prince, which belonged to Reed and her boyfriend, was sedated at the scene and later put down, as confirmed by police.
During the sentencing at Bristol Crown Court, Judge Anna Richardson handed Reed an 18-week prison sentence, which was suspended for 18 months. The court also ordered Reed to undergo mental health treatment. Reed appeared visibly emotional and tearful throughout the hearing. The judge acknowledged her acceptance of responsibility for the incident as sparing those involved the added stress of a trial and noted her efforts over the past year and a half to move forward.
Morgan’s family spoke about the profound impact her death has had on their lives. Her mother, Marie Smith, revealed the depth of their grief, explaining how major family milestones are now overshadowed by her absence. Morgan’s younger sister, Caeila, described her sibling as a lively and positive individual, expressing how she tries to carry forward Morgan’s upbeat spirit. Meanwhile, police officers involved in the case described the investigation as particularly difficult. Detective Sergeant Rich Glanville highlighted the importance of responsible dog ownership and compliance with existing legislation, emphasizing that those who own banned breeds must carefully assess whether they can ensure public safety
