An internal review conducted by the Northern Ireland Assembly examined Jeffrey Donaldson’s conduct during his tenure at Stormont and found no relevant information warranting further inquiry. This investigation, initiated in July following Donaldson’s conviction for child sex offences, did not receive any reports through the designated channels.
In June, Donaldson was convicted on 18 counts of sexual abuse, including one count of rape, acts committed against two women during their childhood. Although the review focused on his period as a member of the legislative assembly (MLA) from 2003 to 2010—during which he also served as a junior minister in the power-sharing government—it also considered his subsequent visits to Stormont as an MP and leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).
The review was commissioned by the Assembly Speaker Edwin Poots and carried out by the chief executive. It was designed to allow any current or former MLAs, staff, or other users of Parliament Buildings to report any incidents of abuse or inappropriate behaviour they might have experienced firsthand. According to an Assembly spokesperson, no reports were received through the review’s contact methods, and an internal information search uncovered no relevant details.
The spokesperson emphasized that the review’s findings were necessarily limited and did not confirm that no incidents took place, only that none were reported or discovered within the parameters of the investigation. The Assembly also stated that any future disclosures would be managed according to existing policies, with prompt referrals to the Police Service of Northern Ireland or other statutory bodies if needed. This review is among several launched following Donaldson’s conviction, including one commissioned by the DUP and led by child safety expert Jim Gamble, and initiatives by other political parties such as the Ulster Unionist Party to provide confidential avenues for sharing information related to Donaldson’s past conduct
