While driving the family’s Volkswagen Polo, Jatinder Kaur was making deliveries alongside her husband and children. The family operated the Keystore grocery store located in Kirkcaldy. During the drive, their 19-year-old daughter, Parveet, sat in the front passenger seat, while their 10-year-old son, Princedeep, was asleep in the back seat next to his father.
The advocate depute explained that the crash occurred when the accused’s vehicle collided head-on with their car, bringing both vehicles to an immediate halt. Witnesses to Hynd’s erratic driving stopped to offer assistance, and police and paramedics arrived shortly thereafter. Authorities noted that Hynd “smelled of alcohol and appeared to not know she had been in a collision.”
At the scene, Jatinder Kaur was unresponsive and pronounced dead, while her husband, Satwant Singh, was taken to hospital where he passed away two days later. In May of this year, Hynd was arrested and formally charged in connection with the incident. Defence lawyer Ewen Roy stated that Hynd acknowledged the “devastating consequences which weigh on her heavily.”
During sentencing, Judge O’Grady addressed Hynd directly, emphasizing the gravity of the charge, saying, “You understand the charge you have pled guilty to is very grave indeed. You have left in your wake a dead husband and wife.” The family issued a heartfelt statement expressing their deep loss. They said, “We will miss them more than words can express,” and described how their mother was a source of guidance and comfort, while their father’s love for the family was unwavering. They concluded by noting the difficulty in coming to terms with the fact their parents will no longer be present for important moments in their lives.
