Israel’s Foreign Minister, Gideon Saar, has issued a stern warning that Israel will respond if the United Kingdom implements sanctions regarding the possible expansion of settlements in the West Bank. This comes amid shifting UK policy under the new foreign secretary, Ed Miliband, who revealed plans for a significant policy overhaul toward Israel.
In his inaugural speech to Parliament in his new role, Miliband announced a forthcoming “comprehensive reset” of the UK’s approach to Israel. He emphasized that the government would review measures to prevent British companies from participating in the financing, construction, or promotion of new settlements in the occupied West Bank. This marks a clear intention to challenge Israeli activities in contested territories.
Reacting to these statements, Gideon Saar spoke to the Hebrew news portal Ynet, cautioning that if Britain takes action against Israel, there will be reciprocal consequences. He stated, “If Britain acts against Israel, Israel will act against Britain” and warned that such a move would be a serious error. Saar’s comments highlight the tensions between the two countries over the issue.
The controversy centers on plans unveiled last month by Israel to tender construction work on approximately 1,200 homes in the E1 area, located east of Jerusalem. This zone is considered of strategic importance and its development has faced strong international opposition. Critics argue that building in this area would effectively split the West Bank and sever East Jerusalem’s connection from the surrounding territories. Miliband described the initiative as a violation of international law and a dangerous line crossing that could undermine the viability of a future Palestinian state.
