A spokesperson from the Nepali army has confirmed that among the 119 individuals rescued in Nepal following severe flooding, one is a British citizen. The rescue operation took place nearly a week after the catastrophic floods struck Nepal and the adjacent region of Tibet, causing over 1,000 fatalities and leaving more than 3,900 individuals unaccounted for.
The British man, whose identity has not been revealed, was saved through airlift efforts, according to the Nepali army. It remains unclear if he was present in the country when the floods initially occurred. Alongside him, 118 Nepalese citizens were also rescued; the group included 44 women and 74 men, as stated by the army spokesperson based at Bidur camp in the Trishuli Nuwakot district.
Reports indicate that 33 British nationals are still missing following the disaster. Thousands remain unaccounted for, including over 600 workers believed to be trapped within extensive mud-blocked tunnels at hydropower construction sites along the Trishuli River. Nepal’s Prime Minister, Balendra Shah, mentioned on Monday that 279 people had been rescued from these sites to date.
The international rescue effort is being led by combined Chinese and Nepalese military forces, with additional assistance from experts hailing from India, Korea, and Australia. The Nepalese Tourist Board announced on Tuesday that a total of 330 foreign nationals have been rescued so far.
