A teenage boy has been formally charged in court with the murder of a man in Dungannon, County Tyrone, as well as the attempted murder of two other individuals involved in the same incident. The deceased, a 61-year-old man, was discovered alongside his injured eight-year-old daughter at a residence on Lisnahull Road on Saturday morning.
The man’s 48-year-old wife was also injured during the assault, but her injuries were not considered life-threatening. The accused, a 16-year-old whose identity remains protected due to his age, faces additional charges of making threats to kill. He made a brief court appearance in Omagh on Tuesday morning, where he was remanded in custody.
According to reports from BBC News NI, the man who lost his life originally hailed from Guinea-Bissau but had been living in Northern Ireland for more than twenty years. During the court proceedings, defence solicitor Jarlath Faloon highlighted the “clear concerns” regarding the teenager’s mental health. Although the defendant was examined by a mental health nurse over the weekend, he has not undergone a full psychiatric evaluation.
District Judge Conor Heaney therefore ordered a mental health assessment to be carried out. The young defendant is scheduled to appear again at Dungannon Youth Court on 15 September
