Construction activities at a wildlife site in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, have come to a halt following the issuance of a High Court injunction aimed at stopping unauthorised building and the placement of caravans. The injunction was granted late on Saturday night, at 22:30 BST, to prevent further work on a field located off Sheering Mill Lane. Despite this, machinery was observed operating on the site throughout Sunday and into Monday morning.
A group of approximately twelve police officers arrived on the scene shortly before 09:00 BST on Monday. Video footage and photographs captured vehicles leaving the area shortly after their arrival. Local residents, some of whom had camped at the site overnight to protest the development, welcomed the police intervention by clapping and cheering as the diggers and vans departed.
Officials from East Hertfordshire District Council initially became aware of the unauthorised digging on Saturday morning. The council confirmed that the injunction not only puts a temporary stop to construction work but also prohibits the introduction of caravans and forbids anyone from occupying the land. Community members have expressed concern about the ecological significance of the site, highlighting that it is a frequent habitat for muntjac deer and supports a diverse ecosystem.
Hertfordshire Police acknowledged being aware of a dispute related to the field’s use but have yet to provide a detailed comment. A High Court hearing concerning the matter is scheduled for 15 September, with the council striving to arrange an earlier date if possible.
