A significant fire erupted at a waste processing facility near Wembley Stadium in north-west London, resulting in the closure of several local Tube and rail services. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) reported deploying 125 firefighters to the scene, located at an industrial estate on Hannah Close in Neasden. The fire produced large smoke plumes, visible from central London, prompting warnings for nearby residents to keep windows and doors closed due to the heavy smoke.
The emergency call to the LFB was received shortly after 11:30 BST, and 20 fire engines were sent to combat the blaze. Transport for London (TfL) has suspended the entire Metropolitan line, while a partial shutdown of the Jubilee line operates between Willesden Green and Wembley Park. National Rail announced delays and cancellations on routes to and from London Marylebone because train lines toward Aylesbury are blocked.
Assistant Commissioner Andy Pennick of the LFB described the incident as “a well-developed fire involving a waste transfer facility” that required immediate reinforcement with 20 fire engines. He emphasized the duration of the operation, saying, “This is a protracted incident that will see crews on scene for the remainder of the day as the work to fully extinguish the fire.” Pennick also expressed his gratitude: “I’d like to thank our firefighters for their hard work so far at this fire, and our control officers for managing a significant number of calls and coordinating our response.”
The fire is affecting an industrial unit measuring approximately 100 meters by 150 meters (161,400 sq ft), according to the LFB. This facility is managed by London Energy, owned by the North London Waste Authority, which oversees waste disposal for seven boroughs including Barnet, Camden, and Hackney. A representative from London Energy confirmed they are cooperating with emergency services and assured that all employees are safe, with no injuries reported.
