The *Picture of Health* exhibition is currently touring Liverpool, with its next stop at the Central Library. This free event invites locals to engage with the question, “What does health mean to you?” and encourages visitors to contribute their own perspectives to a collective representation of health. The exhibition runs from Tuesday, 1 September, through Monday, 14 September 2026.
This community-driven initiative showcases photographs taken by Liverpool’s Community Champions alongside members of the communities they represent. Using disposable cameras, participants captured images of their friends, family, favorite places, and daily experiences that contribute to their sense of health, happiness, safety, and connection. The photos reveal that health extends far beyond medical care, highlighting the importance of having supportive relationships, being part of a community, enjoying safe environments, celebrating culture and faith, connecting with nature, and seizing opportunities for growth and wellbeing.
More than 650 personal and impactful photographs feature in the exhibition, each accompanied by captions created by the photographers. Many descriptions are bilingual, presented both in the participants’ first language and in English, allowing individuals to share their stories authentically. The images also illuminate the changes residents believe could enhance health and wellbeing in their neighborhoods.
Councillor Harry Doyle, Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Culture, expressed his enthusiasm for the exhibition’s reach: “The response to the first Picture of Health exhibition at the Cunard Building was fantastic, so I’m delighted that even more people will now have the chance to experience it at Central Library. These photographs celebrate the people, places and connections that help Liverpool residents stay well. They also give communities an opportunity to show us what needs to change in their neighbourhoods. I’m incredibly proud of our Community Champions and everyone who shared their experiences. I would encourage residents to visit the exhibition and see Liverpool through their eyes.”
Professor Matthew Ashton, Director of Public Health for Liverpool City Council, explained the significance of the project: “Our health is shaped by our everyday lives, from our homes and relationships to our income, environment and the opportunities available to us. Picture of Health brings these influences to life through the honest experiences of Liverpool residents. Listening to these experiences helps us better understand what supports people’s wellbeing and the barriers communities can face. Residents are not simply an audience for public health. They are essential partners in creating a Fairer, Healthier Liverpool, and this exhibition shows why their voices must be at the heart of our work.”
Supported by Liverpool City Council’s Public Health team, participants were given sessions to build confidence and learn how to use photography as a storytelling tool before receiving their cameras. Visitors can explore the exhibition for free in the Atrium of Liverpool Central Library during the library’s normal opening hours from 1 to 14 September 2026.
Plans are in development for a series of roadshows and pop-up events connected to *Picture of Health* throughout Liverpool over the coming year. These will provide further opportunities for residents to engage with the project closer to their homes. Community Champions will assist in selecting the most appropriate locations for these events.
