The United States has officially designated the UK-based organization Palestine Action as a terrorist entity and imposed sanctions on the group. According to the US Department of the Treasury, the organization has been involved in supporting “numerous acts of terrorism since July 2020.” This move follows the UK government’s decision in 2025 to ban Palestine Action under anti-terrorism laws, making any support for the group illegal within the country.
Huda Ammori, co-founder of Palestine Action, addressed the designation on social media, expressing her disapproval by stating, “As a Palestinian and Iraqi, the fact the country which destroyed both my homelands is calling me a terrorist, is beyond hypocritical.” In a statement given to the BBC, Ammori maintained that the group’s tactics have “always been about saving lives” and viewed the ban as a serious threat to free speech and democratic values.
The announcement came from the US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who warned far-left extremists and their supporters that the government would use its full financial authority against them. “Political terrorism has no place in our society, and we will continue to cut the financial lifelines of these groups until they are eliminated,” Bessent stated firmly. This sanction is part of a broader set of measures taken by the Trump administration targeting what it identifies as far-left terror groups globally.
Palestine Action has engaged in direct action campaigns targeting Israeli-affiliated arms companies based in the UK, resulting in significant legal challenges. In June, the UK Court of Appeal upheld the government’s ban, finding the restrictions on freedom of expression to be “justified and proportionate.” However, Palestine Action has received permission to take the case to the Supreme Court. Additionally, four members of the group were imprisoned in June after a break-in at a defense contractor, causing over £1 million in damages, with one member convicted of inflicting grievous bodily harm on a police officer during the incident
