London-based DJ and producer Karen Nyame, known as KG, is launching a new label called Rhythm in the City. The label has debuted with the release of its first single, ‘P.L.L’ (Pretty Little Liar), which will feature on KG’s forthcoming EP ‘Red’. The new EP will showcase KG’s signature style that revamps UK club music with Ghanaian influences and emotional narratives. According to KG, the new single is like “a diary entry in music format”, with an “electronic, low-end, Afro percussive bounce”, and tells a tale of heartbreak, jealousy, and unrequited love.
Named after her party, Rhythm in the City, the new record label reflects KG’s own production signature and embodies a multitude of styles such as UK Funky, Afro-Alte, Gqom, Amapiano, Highlife, Afro-House, and Altè R&B. The Rhythm in the City sound is unconventionally rhythmic and is a hub for genre-bending, Afro-Electronic music, thus aiming to break conventions and formulas in electronic dance music.
Last year, KG released the single ‘Taboo,’ which is included in her first extended project since 2021 with Sensei II. The ‘Red’ EP tracklist includes the recently released ‘P.L.L,’ ‘WET,’ and ‘NIGHTRYDE’ featuring Leonce.
Rhythm in the City has its roots in KG’s event series, which she describes as an event for the “grown and sexy.” KG says the event, which regularly sells out across London, allows people to dance, seduce, and most importantly feel.
KG has gained recognition with her DJ sets at a number of venues and festivals globally, such as Fabric, Glastonbury Festival, Boiler Room, and The Warehouse Project. At present, KG speaks out for the empowerment of women and people of color in the music industry and frequently asks established institutions and festivals to be more diverse
