Improvement works have begun on Wavertree High Street and Picton Road, aiming to enhance the travel experience along this important route in Liverpool. This phase follows an investment exceeding £2 million provided by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, with the construction activities commencing on Monday, 6 July.
The appointed contractor, Aureos Highways, is responsible for carrying out the planned enhancements, which will extend from the Spofforth Road junction up to the Picton Clock Tower Roundabout. The project is expected to take approximately 26 weeks to complete. Key elements of the work include complete resurfacing of the carriageway, upgrading pedestrian crossing points, and adding push-button crossings on all four sides of the intersection between Picton Road and Rathbone Road.
An additional feature of the project involves the installation of a state-of-the-art vehicle detection system to optimize the traffic signals along the route. This technology will improve signal timings and enhance lane capacity. Throughout the process, careful planning has been undertaken to minimize disruption to local residents, commuters, and businesses in the area.
Upon completion, these upgrades will represent another step in the broader City Region program, for which the Council has received £13.6 million aimed at improving the reliability and durability of major roads across Liverpool. Currently, temporary arrangements are in place to accommodate the installation of a new pedestrian crossing at the junction of Picton Road and Wellington Road. This includes road closures, traffic diversions, and temporary signals, which are expected to remain until mid-October. These will affect vehicle access on Wellington Road and result in altered traffic flow at Rathbone Road and Picton High Street, as well as service disruptions impacting certain bus routes. The Council is regularly providing updates through social media, with public transport diversion details available on the Merseytravel website.
Councillor Dan Barrington, Cabinet Member for Transport and Connectivity, emphasized the priority of safety for all road users: “The safety of all road users is a priority to us, whether they’re driving, walking or wheeling. This is a particularly busy location, and we know residents have raised concerns about how difficult it can be to cross safely.
