The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings as thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rainfall are expected to impact various regions of the UK later this week. These alerts, covering Wednesday and Thursday, target areas including eastern Wales, the Midlands, northern England, East Anglia, and southern England, with London also under the advisory.
This event is anticipated to be among the most extensive episodes of heavy rain across southern and central Britain during the summer. Although this rainfall may be beneficial to drought-affected zones, the quantity of precipitation may lead to rapid flooding, particularly in places where the soil has become dry and impermeable. Additionally, the storms may bring lightning, sizeable hail, and strong winds, creating potentially hazardous conditions.
The thunderstorms will originate over France and advance northward, driven by warm, humid air arriving from the south. On Tuesday evening, showers are expected to reach Cornwall and the West Country, escalating later into more intense downpours with thunder and lightning during the night. By around midnight, heavy showers could arrive along the southeast coast, crossing over Greater London and progressing north into the home counties and East Anglia.
The initial yellow warning is scheduled to begin at 3:00 BST on Wednesday, lasting until 22:00 BST. While not every location under the warning may experience storms, those areas that do could see rainfall amounts reaching 20-30mm within an hour. Some locations might endure even more intense rain, with totals reaching 40-50mm over two to three hours. Flash flooding is a concern, especially on hard, dry ground where water absorption is limited, and large hail along with gusty winds may also be present. Moving into Thursday, the storm threat persists with a second warning activated from 06:00 BST to 22:00 BST. These storms could slow across the Midlands, Wales, and Northern England, heightening the risk of flash floods. Rainfall amounts of 20-30mm in three hours are forecast, with some areas potentially experiencing up to 50mm, and possibly over 75mm across certain elevated east-facing terrain.
