A house in Middlesbrough was struck by a car shortly before a fatal collision on the A66, and the property belonged to the father of a teenager who died in the crash. The teenager, Cole Worthy, aged 17, was among five young men who lost their lives when a Volkswagen Passat, traveling the wrong way, collided with an armed response vehicle from Cleveland Police. Two police officers also died in the tragic accident.
According to police reports, in the early hours of Saturday and the night before, multiple calls were made concerning two cars being driven recklessly around the town. Authorities noted that a Volvo XC60, thought to be connected to the Passat, had been seen ramming into various properties. Importantly, there is no indication that Worthy’s father was involved in any criminal behavior.
The officers who died in the crash were PC Tom Clough, 38, and PC Matthew Blades, 37. The other victims alongside Cole Worthy included Michael Robert Cahill, 23, Jacob Matusiak, 23, Makai Saddington, 18, and Theo Rae, 17. The incident shocked the local community and raised questions about the events leading up to the collision.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct revealed that police had pursued the Passat for nearly seven minutes after it was linked to previous suspected criminal acts. The pursuit was called off about 10 seconds before the crash occurred as the car entered the dual carriageway. Both the Volkswagen Passat and the Volvo XC60 were found to be using cloned number plates, but they had been detected by automatic number plate recognition systems
