Liverpool City Council Leader, Councillor Liam Robinson, has expressed his approval following the announcement that the Liverpool City Region will receive £380 million to support the development of approximately 3,100 new homes. This funding is part of the Government’s Social and Affordable Homes Programme, which aims to provide safe and secure housing for families currently living in temporary accommodation or on waiting lists.
Cllr Robinson, who also serves as chair of the Local Government Association’s Inclusive Growth Committee, highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by cities like Liverpool. He stated, “This announcement is welcome news for cities like Liverpool, where too many families are waiting too long for a secure, affordable home.” He emphasized that demand for social housing remains high and the pressures on temporary accommodation are still significant, underscoring the importance of such substantial investment.
The city of Liverpool has been actively addressing housing issues through a comprehensive strategy aimed at increasing affordable homes. Efforts include bringing long-term empty properties back into use, developing new homes on small sites, facilitating stalled housing projects, and collaborating with housing associations and partners to boost affordable housing supply. Furthermore, a new Local Plan is in progress to guide the delivery of thousands of homes in coming years while ensuring development aligns with local community needs.
Cllr Robinson also spoke about the broader potential impact of the funding, suggesting that with adequate resources, flexibility, and long-term certainty, councils could enhance their ability to provide genuinely affordable housing. “Today’s announcement has the potential to accelerate that work. If councils are given the resources, flexibility and long-term certainty they need, we can deliver more genuinely affordable homes, reduce reliance on temporary accommodation and give more Liverpool families the security of a place they can call home,” he said
