The woman first encountered Allen when he substituted for her music teacher, initially perceiving him as “friendly” and “jokey.” However, what began as casual interactions gradually evolved into a grooming process that she did not initially recognize. She explained, “When you are in it, you do not realise what is happening, it is very slow.” Recalling specific moments, she noted how unusual it was for a teacher to offer her a glass of wine in the middle of the morning, saying, “When you are that age, you are just a teenager, you don’t think. He was giving me like a glass of wine mid-morning, you know, a teacher doing that. That’s not right, is it?”
As Allen became more involved, what were once clarinet and saxophone lessons at school shifted to sessions held beforehand at her family home. He even began driving her to school. She described how the early signs were subtle—touches on the shoulder or adjustments to how she held her instrument—”just very tiny little subtle things, those first points of contact which are normalised.” The gradual and understated nature of his behavior meant she did not recognize the abuse until much later. “It is so slow, it is so subtle, the behaviour development, that you do not see it creeping up and then you freeze,” she added.
It wasn’t until 2022, during grief counseling, that she fully confronted what had happened to her. The following year, she formally reported the abuse to the police. Reflecting on her motivation, she said, “I am a mum now and my children are the age that I was then – and that cannot happen to them.” Summoning the courage to come forward took time. “It took me a few days just to pluck up the courage,” she recalled. Detective Constable Andrew Jones from West Midlands Police’s Major Crime Team expressed his gratitude toward her, stating, “I would like to express my gratitude to the brave woman who came forward to report what Allen had done to her as a child. She has been so brave throughout the investigation and court process.”
Allen faced sentencing at Birmingham Crown Court in July. His defense argued that the offense was committed during a challenging period when Allen was experiencing anxiety. However, His Honour Judge Paul Farrer KC rejected the claim that Allen’s judgment was impaired at the time, emphasizing that he had exploited a position of trust. The fact the offenses had gone undiscovered for over thirty years was noted as allowing Allen to live freely within the community. The court also recognized Allen’s poor health, including diabetes, glaucoma, impaired hearing, a history of heart attack, and possible early Parkinson’s disease. For the woman, the most significant outcome was not the sentencing itself but the guilty verdict. She stated, “I felt heard, I felt people have listened and they believe me. It is really validating and it raises your self-esteem a little bit, it means a lot.”
In the aftermath, she has turned to art as a means of understanding and expressing the experience of grooming. “It is therapeutic for me,” she shared. “A picture is worth a thousand words, and you can convey a lot of emotions in it.” She hopes her story will resonate with other survivors and offer support to those in similar circumstances. Lisa Thompson, chief executive of the Rape and Sexual Violence Project, emphasized the importance of holistic expression for healing. “Trauma is embodied and sometimes finding words to explain what we have been subjected to, and what we carry, is difficult,” she said. Thompson also stressed the crucial need for ongoing support throughout the process, highlighting the profound impact of such experiences. “It can be a life-changing thing which has happened to someone, and it may not be just one isolated incident, some people may have been subjected to multiple incidents over a number of years or decades. People can feel really isolated, alone, depressed and anxious, and to have the support of someone who believes them and can help them through the process is super important.
