A power failure at the CrossCountry control centre in Birmingham has caused widespread cancellations of train services across the UK. The outage, which began on Saturday, has disrupted many of the systems essential for managing railway operations, according to the train operator. As a result, the company has had to suspend services on nearly all of its routes until further notice due to what it describes as “significant and unforeseen disruption.”
Among the affected routes are major links such as the line between Manchester and Birmingham, which includes stops at Stoke-on-Trent, Coventry, and Wolverhampton. Other canceled services stretch from Leeds to York, Cheltenham to Cardiff, and Glasgow to Edinburgh. CrossCountry highlighted that, despite the extensive disruption, the route connecting Peterborough, Cambridge, and Stansted Airport is expected to maintain a “near-normal” level of service.
Addressing the situation, a spokesperson for CrossCountry stated, “We are working closely with relevant partners and will provide further updates as soon as possible.” The operator also apologized for the inconvenience caused to passengers and confirmed that tickets for CrossCountry services will be accepted by other train companies during the disruption.
Passengers affected by delays of 30 minutes or more are eligible for Delay Repay compensation. Additionally, travelers who decide not to undertake their journey due to the cancellations have the option to request a refund for their tickets. The company continues to monitor the situation as it works toward restoring normal service across its network
