This event marked Davis’s first public appearance since her announcement on August 11 that she has been diagnosed with stage four breast cancer. In that initial statement, she revealed that the cancer had metastasized to her bones after being diagnosed a year and a half prior. She explained that it was already too late for chemotherapy treatment.
During the event, Davis engaged warmly with fans by signing autographs and taking photographs before joining Saturday’s discussion panel. While some attendees expressed their affection by telling her, “I love you so much,” none asked her directly about her health situation.
Joining Davis on the panel were director Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg, the lead actor from the film “Shaun of the Dead.” Davis, who portrayed Dianne, an aspiring actress and one of the key survivors in the cult British zombie comedy, shared her fondest memories from filming. She recalled, “when we all pretended to be zombies and walked across the square; it was like being naughty schoolkids.” She added, “It was a fun time, we went a bit mad.”
Known also for her role as receptionist Dawn Tinsley in the BBC sitcom “The Office,” and daughter of comedian Jasper Carrott, Davis received applause when asked to offer advice to those interested in entering the film industry. She encouraged, “We all grow up with a different life with a different world telling us we all have limitations,” but stressed, “None of us do, our only limitations are things that we think are limiting.
