World's oldest person celebrates turning 117 in Lightwater

In 1931, Caterham met her future husband, Norman, a lieutenant colonel in the British Army, at a dinner party in the United Kingdom. The couple later relocated to Hong Kong, where Caterham established a nursery school. Together, they raised two daughters, both of whom unfortunately passed away before Caterham.

Norman died in 1976, and Caterham’s family history includes her sister Gladys, who also reached an impressive age, living to 104. Remarkably, Caterham was still able to drive at the age of 97. In September, shortly after celebrating her 116th birthday, she received a visit from King Charles.

During their encounter, Caterham fondly recalled King Charles’s investiture as the Prince of Wales in 1969, when he was 21 years old. She told him, “All the girls were in love with you and wanted to marry you.” Despite Caterham’s extraordinary longevity, the record for the oldest person ever remains with French woman Jeanne Calment, who lived to 122 years and 164 days before passing away in 1997, according to Guinness World Records
