People smuggler exposed by BBC investigation arrested and charged

A man previously convicted for people smuggling, who was discovered by the BBC residing in Leicestershire, has been taken into custody and charged with immigration-related offences. Twana Jamal Khdir, an Iraqi national known as the “godfather” of the migrant camps in France, served a prison term there for his involvement in people smuggling.

The BBC recently disclosed that Khdir had been living in the United Kingdom. Following this revelation, he was arrested on Tuesday near Uppingham during a coordinated operation led by the Midlands Criminal Financial Investigations team, with assistance from Leicestershire Police. The Crown Prosecution Service subsequently charged him, and he made a court appearance at Leicester Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

During the hearing, Khdir admitted to entering the UK without valid entry clearance but denied accusations of attempting to secure permission to remain in the country through deceitful methods. He was then remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear next at Leicester Crown Court on 5 October.

Khdir received a five-year prison sentence in France in 2016, where officials labeled him one of the most effective people smugglers ever apprehended. Prosecutors at the time stated that the then 36-year-old Iraqi Kurd was generating up to £100,000 weekly by facilitating the illegal movement of immigrants across the Channel
