A Belgian university has suspended a postdoctoral researcher following accusations he made against the late Cambridge professor Jason Arday regarding plagiarism. Nathan Cofnas, who identifies as a “race realist,” had been critical of Arday’s academic work, which sparked a prolonged controversy before Arday’s death on August 14.
Cofnas revealed that he is currently being investigated by Ghent University over allegations of discrimination directed at Arday. The university confirmed that a staff member is subject to a “preliminary disciplinary investigation” and has been suspended temporarily as a precautionary measure.
In response to the situation and Arday’s passing, Ghent University’s rector Petra De Sutter and vice-rector Herwig Reynaert issued a joint statement acknowledging the seriousness of recent remarks by the postdoctoral researcher related to the controversy. They emphasized the institution’s commitment to upholding human dignity and rejecting all forms of discrimination, hatred, and racism. The statement stressed that academic freedom is highly valued, even when ideas are contentious, but also noted that this freedom carries responsibilities and may be limited to protect the rights of others.
The university leaders expressed that Arday’s death should encourage reflection on how individuals are treated both inside and outside academia, especially when public disputes arise. Nathan Cofnas is employed in the department of philosophy and moral sciences at Ghent University. It is also noted that his previous position at a Cambridge college ended in 2024, following criticism of his assertion that in a true meritocracy, black individuals would largely vanish from prominent roles aside from sports and entertainment
