The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are reportedly preparing to return to the United Kingdom, according to BBC News. Sources indicate that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle plan to move from the United States to a private residence near London later this month. This new home will be outside royal property and is intended as a permanent family base.
Their children, Prince Archie, aged seven, and Princess Lilibet, five, are set to begin attending a school in the UK starting this September. King Charles was informed of the move last Sunday. Despite their return, there are no plans for Harry and Meghan to take up official royal duties again. The couple met with the King at his Highgrove estate in July, but the relocation was not discussed during that visit.
It is understood that the monarch had not been aware of the Sussexes’ decision to move back until shortly before last weekend. Nevertheless, he welcomed the prospect of spending more private time with his extended family. Prince Harry and Meghan will retain their status as private individuals without any changes to their official roles. Additionally, Prince William and Princess Catherine have been notified about the couple’s intentions.
This relocation comes after the Sussexes stepped back from their royal roles and left the UK for California in early 2020. Family dynamics have been tense over the past few years, although the July visit to King Charles and Queen Camilla marked a significant step in improving relations. That meeting, described by the Palace as a “private family occasion,” was the King’s first chance to meet his grandchildren in person in more than four years. The Sussexes’ last joint visit to the UK was in 2022 for Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral.
Security arrangements have been a longstanding challenge for the family. Prince Harry’s request for police protection during the July visit was declined, reflecting ongoing disagreements over security provisions. Last year, the Duke lost a legal battle to reinstate his previous level of protection after he ceased performing royal duties and moved to the US. The Home Office has stated that decisions on royal security are made by the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (Ravec), maintaining a system described as “rigorous and proportionate.” Harry has previously cited safety concerns as a key reason for avoiding bringing his family back to the UK.
During his recent trip, Prince Harry supported the Invictus Games, an event he founded for injured service personnel, which is scheduled to take place in Birmingham next year. However, his visit was somewhat overshadowed by a High Court ruling against him in a privacy case involving Associated Newspapers, operators of the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday. The lawsuit accused the publishers of using illegal methods to gather information, allegations that the companies firmly denied. Addressing the court in January, Harry described the press intrusion he and Meghan have endured, stating, “They’ve made my wife’s life an absolute misery.”
