Police have released the names of three family members who tragically died after encountering trouble in the sea off Shoreham. The deceased have been identified as Hassan El-Khawas, aged 55, Zeina Alayn, 37, and their daughter Sara El-Khawas, who was 14 years old. According to Sussex Police, the family were believed to have entered the water near Shoreham Fort on Tuesday.
A younger girl from the same family, who was rescued alongside them, remains hospitalized in critical condition. Authorities reported that the family had traveled from their home in London to visit Shoreham. After reviewing CCTV footage, investigators concluded that the incident was a tragic accident, with no evidence of third-party involvement.
The Palestinian Forum confirmed that the family were British citizens of Palestinian descent, tracing their origins to the Rashidieh refugee camp in Lebanon. The Palestinian embassy in London also noted that Hassan El-Khawas had been a refugee. Adnan Hmidan, chairman of the Palestinian Forum in Britain, expressed the community’s deep shock and sorrow over the incident.
Hmidan mentioned that two other children were present on the shore at the time of the drowning. He said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire family, particularly the children, who are facing an unimaginable loss.” Meanwhile, the Palestinian Embassy in London is closely following the situation, working with British authorities to understand the circumstances and monitor the condition of the hospitalized girl.
