Get free bike checks this summer

Liverpool City Council has partnered with Cycling UK to offer a series of complimentary “Dr Bike” drop-in sessions throughout the city, running until the end of September. These events aim to promote safer cycling and support active travel by providing cyclists with the chance to have their bicycles professionally inspected free of charge.

At these sessions, participants receive expert bike checks to ensure their rides are safe and roadworthy. Additionally, attendees are given valuable guidance on how to cycle safely and coexist responsibly with other road users. Information about the schedule of upcoming Dr Bike events is made available on the Council’s official website.

Beyond encouraging cycling, Liverpool City Council is also emphasizing the significance of road safety for all individuals using the city’s streets. Everyone—whether walking, wheeling, cycling, or driving—is encouraged to familiarize themselves with the Highway Code to contribute to a safer environment. The Code highlights that vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists, should be given priority, while operators of larger vehicles bear a greater responsibility to minimize danger.

To help improve safety, drivers are encouraged to stay alert and anticipate hazards, watch carefully for cyclists especially at junctions and roundabouts, avoid distractions, allow sufficient space (at least 1.5 metres when overtaking cyclists and e-scooter users at speeds up to 30 mph), and practice the “Dutch Reach” technique when opening vehicle doors. This method entails using the far-hand to open the door, naturally turning the body to check for approaching cyclists and pedestrians. Councillor Dan Barrington, Cabinet Member for Transport and Connectivity, highlighted the benefits of cycling in Liverpool and the value of these free safety checks, stating, “By looking out for one another and sharing the road responsibly, we can help make Liverpool’s streets safer for everyone.”
