Political commentator Tim Montgomerie has announced his intention to challenge his suspension from Reform UK following his public critiques of senior party officials in media appearances. Speaking to BBC Newsnight, he described his appeal as a pivotal test of whether Reform UK truly embraces free speech within its ranks.
Montgomerie, a right-leaning commentator who left the Conservative Party to join Reform UK in 2024, initially viewed himself as a supportive yet candid ally to the party leadership. However, his relationship with Reform UK appears to have soured, culminating in the suspension of his party membership. The controversy intensified after Montgomerie expressed frustration over party leader Nigel Farage’s “aggrieved tone” concerning the recent Clacton by-election during a BBC interview. Furthermore, on a Spectator podcast recorded before its release, Montgomerie criticized another senior figure, Zia Yusuf, urging him to adopt a more cooperative approach and refrain from behaving “like a child” in political matters. It was reportedly this podcast that precipitated his suspension.
In response to the suspension, Montgomerie declared that he was committed to remaining within Reform UK and would actively contest the decision. He emphasized the party’s potential to connect with voters beyond the Conservative Party’s reach and framed his challenge as a measure of the party’s willingness to tolerate internal dissent. While supportive of Reform’s stances on immigration and welfare, Montgomerie has openly acknowledged the party’s internal divisions. In a video message following the suspension news, he stated his criticisms were made in the interest of strengthening the party. Notably, he asserted that Nigel Farage was unaware of the suspension, and that he had forewarned the leader about his intention to remain a critical voice, drawing on his experience at ConservativeHome. The party’s leadership now faces a complex choice between maintaining or reversing Montgomerie’s suspension, weighing the political difficulties of either course
