Win your place in history aboard the new Mersey Ferry

A public competition has recently been launched, offering a rare chance to become one of the first passengers to sail on the brand-new Mersey Ferry, the Royal Daffodil. This marks the introduction of the first new vessel for the Mersey Ferry service in over six decades. The special celebratory cruise is scheduled for 26 September and will provide attendees with an exclusive early experience of the ferry prior to its full launch into passenger service later this autumn.

The Royal Daffodil represents a significant £26 million investment in the Liverpool City Region’s iconic ferry service. Constructed locally at the APCL Balaena shipyard in Birkenhead, formerly known as Cammell Laird, this new ferry continues a proud regional tradition of shipbuilding. The ferry preserves an important element of Liverpool’s heritage while also enhancing the future of public transport within the area. Along with serving the well-known River Explorer Cruise and commuter routes, the vessel is equipped to host special events, integrating modern amenities that boost its role as a multifunctional attraction.

Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, expressed his personal connection to the ferry, recalling childhood memories spent traveling across the river. He emphasized the ferry’s longstanding importance to local families, saying, “For generations of families, the Ferry Cross the Mersey has been part of growing up here.” He highlighted that the Royal Daffodil is a “£26 million investment, not just in public transport, but in the future of our region,” and insisted that “local people should be among the very first passengers to travel aboard and be part of a small piece of history.” The inaugural cruise will feature musical performances and commemorative gifts to celebrate the occasion.

Liverpool City Council Leader Cllr Liam Robinson and Wirral Council Leader Cllr Paula Basnett also spoke about the ferry’s significance. Cllr Robinson described the Mersey Ferries as “a vital part of our transport network” and one of the city’s most recognisable symbols, while Cllr Basnett praised the local workforce for their role in building the vessel and noted how the ferry connects communities across the river. Painted in the traditional red, white, and black colours, the Royal Daffodil boasts a contemporary main-deck lounge, modern bars, and spacious open decks with outstanding views. Designed for accessibility, it features a dedicated lift, ensuring that all passengers can fully enjoy the ferry’s facilities. The ferry’s versatility further extends to its ability to transform into a unique venue for conferences, corporate functions, and private events along Liverpool’s iconic waterfront
