Lennon criticises 'nasty' Scottish Labour as leadership bid fails

Fagan emphasized that the leadership contest went beyond simply analyzing past mistakes within the party. He stated, “It is about what Labour does next,” highlighting a focus on respecting work, supporting communities, and empowering working people to have real influence over their future rather than passively accepting decisions made by others. In response to accusations of the party being “nasty,” particularly concerning Lennon’s remarks on trans rights, Fagan rejected the characterization and stressed the importance of moving forward with compassion. He added, “We need to go forward with compassion, we don’t punch down on anyone.”

Meanwhile, Marra expressed his gratitude at being included on the ballot and looked ahead to a contest marked by camaraderie and good spirit. He acknowledged the significant challenge facing the next Scottish Labour leader, which involves uniting the party, rediscovering its core identity, and reconnecting with the Scottish public. Marra confidently positioned himself as the candidate capable of achieving these goals. Additionally, the MSP from North East Scotland extended his respects to Monica Lennon, describing her as “one of the most formidable and effective campaigners the Labour movement has.”

Anas Sarwar, who has led the party since 2021, chose not to endorse any candidates during a recent event at the Edinburgh Fringe. However, he cautioned those involved in the leadership race against internal conflict. Following Sarwar’s departure, Dame Jackie Baillie has taken up the role of acting leader of Scottish Labour. Due to new regulations implemented last year, politicians are no longer permitted to hold seats simultaneously at Westminster and Holyrood.

Regarding Sarwar’s Holyrood seat, no by-election will be held since he was elected via the regional list system. Monica Lennon, who served in the Scottish Parliament for ten years but failed to secure re-election in May, is next in line on the Glasgow list. The leadership contest winner is scheduled to be announced on 19 September
