Princess Eugenie announces name of baby daughter

Princess Eugenie has revealed the name of her newborn daughter as Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank. Through an announcement on Instagram, she explained that the name honors “three people we love and admire past and present,” including Queen Elizabeth II, and reflects connections to both English and Portuguese heritage—two countries the family cherishes and considers home.

Adelaide arrived earlier this month in a Lisbon hospital, weighing 6 pounds 9 ounces. She is the third child of Eugenie and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, joining their sons August Philip Hawke Brooksbank, born in 2021, and Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank, born in 2023. Sharing fresh photos of the baby and her sons, Eugenie, aged 36, expressed their joy: “Two weeks ago today we welcomed our girl to the world. And since then we’ve had the most special, cosy and love-filled time.”

In her message, Eugenie elaborated on the significance of their daughter’s name: “Named after three people we love and admire past and present, including her great-grandmother who we hold close in our hearts. Her name is part of English and Portuguese history, two places we love and call home. Augie and Ernie are already the best big brothers.” The name Adelaide is believed to be inspired by Queen Adelaide (1792–1849), the wife of King William IV, and Santa Maria Adelaide of Portugal. The meaning behind Annina remains private and may hold a personal significance for the couple that has not been revealed publicly.

Though Adelaide does not carry the title of Royal Highness, she is now 15th in the line of succession, moving ahead of her great-uncle, the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward. At the time of the birth, Buckingham Palace issued a statement noting, “Their Majesties The King and Queen and other members of The Royal Family were delighted to be informed of the news.” Eugenie and her family split their time between Portugal and Ivy Cottage within the grounds of Kensington Palace. The pregnancy was first announced last May with a photo of their sons holding a baby scan, accompanied by the caption: “Baby Brooksbank due 2026!
