A tabby cat named Charlie, who disappeared a decade ago at the age of three, has astonishingly returned home after 10 years. Charlie’s owners, Lucy and Hannah Robertson, were devastated when their outdoor cat failed to come back following a move to a new neighborhood in 2016. Despite searching extensively for months, no clues about her whereabouts emerged, leaving the family heartbroken.
Hannah, 37, explained that after relocating from Newbridge to Abercarn in Caerphilly county, Charlie vanished within just three days. She described the cat as “a bit fiery” and recounted how they received a couple of tips but were unable to catch her. “We never lost hope. But sadly, we just couldn’t find her,” Hannah told BBC Radio Wales Breakfast. Lucy added that efforts to locate Charlie, including asking neighbors and posting on Facebook, proved fruitless. “It was heartbreaking. We were scared that she had been knocked over or that she wasn’t around any more,” she said.
The unexpected break in the case came on Lucy’s 30th birthday last month. Hannah was stunned when a veterinary practice in Abercarn contacted her to say Charlie had been discovered. A local resident had been feeding what they thought was a stray cat living in nearby bushes for several weeks before bringing her to the vets. The clinic identified Charlie through her microchip and shared their surprise at the cat being missing for such a lengthy period. According to Hannah, the tabby was in excellent health, her coat looked good, and she showed no signs of neglect. “She’s been on an adventure,” Hannah remarked, adding that the full story behind Charlie’s decade-long absence might never be known.
Lucy described an emotional reunion, noting that Charlie recognized them “straight away,” which was “lovely, because we didn’t expect that.” Remarkably, the cat looks almost identical to old photographs. While adjusting to living with their other pets is “a bit of a work in progress,” Lucy said Charlie is responding well. The cat is enjoying the food and affection, remaining as friendly as before, and seems to relish the newfound attention. “Right now I feel like she knows she’s a bit of a celebrity,” Lucy commented
